In 2017, I embarked on a fascinating assignment along with a colleague to visit vocational training centres operated by leading corporations across India. From the northern reaches of Jammu to the serene hills of Uttarakhand, my journey was filled with unforgettable experiences.

Traversing through Uttarakhand was a revelation, with each stop along the way offering breath-taking vistas. The sight of the Ganges flowing gracefully through the hills, and the opportunity to take a dip in its sacred waters at Haridwar and Rishikesh, left an indelible impression on my soul. Even a roadblock caused by a landslide provided a chance to savour the natural beauty and capture some memorable photographs.

Journeying to Jammu was an entirely different affair, as I found myself amidst a palpable military presence. AK-47 wielding personnel stood stoically along the roads, a sight that was both surreal and unnerving. Yet, the locals seemed unfazed, carrying on with their daily lives amidst the backdrop of potential danger. It was a stark reminder of the resilience of the human spirit, tempered by the harsh realities of conflict.

The trip to Uri was perhaps the most enlightening of all. Housed within an army camp, I was greeted with hospitality by a buddy assigned to accompany me. Over dinner, an army major general casually recounted the events of the Uri firing, which had occurred a mere 100 meters from our location. Despite the proximity to danger, I remained unfazed, the distance seeming inconsequential in the moment.

However, it was the following morning that reality struck with force. A series of loud thuds reverberated above me, triggering a wave of panic as I instinctively feared the worst. Rushing outside, I found my colleague laughing heartily, revealing that the source of the commotion was merely a group of mischievous monkeys atop our roof.

In that moment, amidst the laughter and relief, I was reminded of the fragility of life and the unpredictability of our surroundings. While we may often claim to be immune to fear, it is in moments like these that our vulnerability is laid bare, and the gravity of our mortality becomes all too real.
